Contexto
My daughter’s attempts at haute couture are charming, and it’s reassuring to see her engaged in a creative process similar to my own as an author. Her models for these clothes are as uncommonly shaped as real ones – mostly Barbie dolls with short hair. There is also a much larger, hairless model called Duncan, who is bow-legged but can blink his eyes. Madeleine’s small sewing factory fits into a shoe box that slides under the bed, the perfect home for rare, expensive fabrics that most people never get to see except on the catwalk or in magazines.

As a modern father, however, I am aware that some people associate the fashion industry with young girls believing that unless their bodies conform to the physical specifications they see in the media then they can never be beautiful. It’s the idea that beauty is bound up with how one appears to other people, so that one is dependent on outside approval for the purpose of self-esteem. It’s not fair that fashion shoulders the blame for these myths.
