To put a halt to the peltings with pillows and insults, they enforce compulsory silences, during one of which Stephens – killingly – performs a gleeful Charleston. They are two of a kind – worldly and infantile, creatures of appetite, conspirators to the last. When their other halves catch up with them in Paris they all settle down to breakfast together.
