The men, in Colonel Sanders's words, 'seemed to have no go in them'. It is little wonder they had become disheartened. The ground that the North Devons now occupied could hardly have been worse: overlooked by the Turks and with little natural cover. Even the digging of proper trenches was impossible, because earth only covered the rock to a depth of three feet; sandbags were needed to build parapets, but sandbags were few.
